I recently obtained what I believe to be a 5cm Pzgr40 Ausführung A with the full alloy cone.
The cone has a rounded point which I haven't seen before therefore I am worried it may not be original.

:?: What does everyone else think.

Many thanks.

Can you unscrew the aluminum cap? Is there tight fit between the cap and the projectile body?

It is not possible to unscrew the cap but then this item has some corrosion as it may have been a ground find. The cap could be just be corroded stuck.

I have attached a few more pictures to show the fit between the body and the cap.

The cap looks much like something fired that was spin stabilized. The projectile is not. I guess it is something "restored" with items which were on hand.

Other opinions?

It looks like grooves which would indicate spin stabilisation are only present around the base of the cap.
It all looks as if the base of the cap is sligthly wider then the projectile itself.

If this cap is original, should't there be 2 holes in the side of the cap then ?

I think it's a repair; who knows, maybe they used the cap of a british fuze ?
Isn't a No.208 cap made out of aluminium ?

After what zünder said about the base of the cap being slightly wider I think the grooves might have been where it has been filed down to remove the overhang.

The length looks good but with the rounded tip and the groove marks it looks more like a repair job.

Has anyone got a picture of a No. 208 cap?

I think the cap has been put on later, because the iron body is pretty much corroded, while the aluminium cap shows no traces of corrosion. I think that should be the other way around.
I don't have a picture of the nr 208 cap, but I do have a picture of an original 5 cm Pzgr 40 with aluminium (or magnewin) cap.

Yes greif, unfortunately for me :( I have to agree. There is no way the aluminium could have avoided any corrosion.
The point of the cap is too rounded also.

Very nice projectile you have by the way.
Thanks for sharing it and if you ever decide to sell you know where I am  .

Hallo, can I ask how much is this projectile in this condition? +/- I have no idea...
