Hallo,

It had the same tungsten core as the 45 mm AT gun AP shell.

- Aluminium head, but without steel undercore-cylinder
- Steel sheetmetal windshield and core with steel cylinder
At the moment I am busy with a cutaway model of a steel cored 40 mm Hungarian projectile depicted above. Does anybody know the exact shape -in and outside- of the aluminiun or zinc nose? I suppose the outside resembles the normal 4 cm HE or practice HE projectile. But what about the inside? Is at a hollow cap or does the inside follow the shape of the penetrator -so a "solid" cap-.
Thanks in advance, regards , DJH
If my memory serves, it is a hollow cap filled with incendiary
Hi Vince, thanks. I made some drawings of the projectiles. Lowest in the row are the HE-T silhouette and cutaway (01 & 02). Above that a drawing of the APHC body after removing the core (03).
As the shape of the body’s outline is the same with both projectiles I suppose it will be the same for the shape of the nose (04). With drawing 05 I inserted the core. It occurred to me –while removing the thread remains of the APHC that the thread of the cap ended 8 mm below the top of the thread (line A) of the projectile body – the full thread is 12 mm long-. The thread of the HE-T is the same, in fact one can screw the cap of the HE on the APHC body.
So in drawing 06 I tried to reconstruct the most likely inner shape of this cap. In 06L I made the part (thicker line) parallel to the thread straight, and than made it follow the arc shape of the outside. In 06 R I started to make the inside of the cap follow the full arc from top to bottom.
The 06L looks more plausible to me, however I would be more than interested to hear your opinion about this.
Thanks in advance, regards DJH
The projectile in 3D as I think the nosecap must have looked, the outlines of the projectile same as the HE
