Hello Sorcerer,

I also really want very much to know what it was used for but I have no idea. The only thing I can tell you about: it is an export case for usage outside germany. Cases for use in the german army or navy had standardised headstamps looking very different from yours.

Hi Alpini,

Do you have examples of export stamps? I might have a 37x94 export shell for The Netherlands.

As for the 37x140, I have never seen it. Very interesting item!

The german artillery headstamps in WW1 and before all had the same standardised system consisting of the following items:

MONTH: Written as a word on army cases, and in roman numbers on Navy cases at position 270°

YEAR: Written in latin numbers at position 90°

LOT-NUMBER: Mostly written at position 0°, exept for smaller cases

MANUFACTURER: Mostly written around the primer, some times at 305°

ACCEPTANCE-STAMP: On army cases mostly at position 180° consisting of some letters describing the acceptance office (since 1915 always state factorys, bevore 1915 also private stamps in big factorys). On Navy cases mostly at pos. 0° consisting of a "M" with a crown.

On cases smaller than 60 mm the positions of these stamps can change but all elements have to be there.

only the year is writen without month -> export
no year and no month -> export
no Lot-number -> export
no acceptance stamp, but all other elements existing -> never seen :-)

On the attached image is a case from me. This is also very unclear for me, as it seems to be a 40 mm case. The exactly measurement is: 39,1x170R and for me it not looks like beeing widened. Headstamp is:

"Patronenfabrik Karlsruhe 1900"
