Great post DM53, as a matter of fact i have a 28 cm case that suffered a problem with is bottom :-)

Does anyone know how such a strengthened cartridge was done? How did they manage to strengthen a 28 cm L/40 base? I have a picture of a 28cm/l/40 case, where the bottom was blown up when it was loaded (if it exploded outside of the barrel, the whole cartridge was in pieces . It rased 3 cm and the outer diameter of the last 15 cm of the case expanded. Even the stamps are doubled, not able to see on the picture, but the acceptance stamp "m"is now mm. Like other marks.

Who knows more about this remarkable modification, and the reason they performed it?

Another picture. Look at the rings arround the expanded area. A large pressure was released without support on the back.
Ive seen a few pictures of 7,92 cartridges, but the large bore guns suffered the same problem, i woul'dn't be to happy to be the loader of this gun when this happened.

Eh, opening the breech would have been very problematic.

I wonder if this really is a shellcase blown up during loading.
Normally, the charge for these guns consisted out of several bags, with a shellcase to close of the barrel (in case of a sliding breech).
If the case shown by Kees is the result of such accident, the other bags would have blown upon as well.
I cannot imagine am expanded shellbase is the only result from such an accident, total damage must have been a lot bigger then just that.

@the kees: is there a story behind this case ? Do you know where it originally came from ?
